Toowoomba Hospital Foundation has reached another significant milestone in the development of their Museum of Health, awarding Hutchinson Builders the tender to refurbish the Medical Superintendents House on the Baillie Henderson Hospital campus.
Toowoomba Hospital Foundation CEO Alison Kennedy said work would start on site in the coming weeks.
“We’re incredibly excited to be working with the Hutchies team here in Toowoomba who have worked on some beautiful historic buildings across the country,” she said.
“The awarding of this tender is the start of a significant project, not only with the conservation of the heritage-listed Medical Superintendents House but the delivery of a museum precinct that will bring great value to our region’s tourism, culture, and arts industries.
“Our community will start to see some activity on site really soon as the project gets underway and we’re very grateful for the support and interest we’ve received so far.”
Hutchinson Builders Team Leader Sean Lees said Hutchies is looking forward to working with the Foundation on the project.
“Hutchies and the Toowoomba Hospital Foundation have a close working relationship and one that has been developed over many years,” he said.
“We are extremely grateful to be given the opportunity to bring such an exciting project to life and one that will assist the Foundation in continuing their great work within the Toowoomba and surrounding areas. It’s a pretty easy project to get behind and we can’t wait to get stuck into it.”
Mrs Kennedy said volunteers are busily preparing the collections and discovering lots of gems.
“The Toowoomba Hospital and Baillie Henderson Hospital collections are truly one-of-a-kind and every day we’re discovering something new and interesting about the history and practice of health and medicine in our region,” she said.
“It makes us even more excited and eager to open a dedicated space for these stories to be shared and to offer a space for our community to share their stories.”
Toowoomba Hospital Foundation has received $1.16 million from the Australian Government Building Better Regions Fund to complete Stage 1 of the project.
